Absolute mandate for President

Thursday, 28 January 2010

The public had given President Mahinda Rajapaksa an absolute mandate as President for the second term. It was the tradition of the people of this country to express their gratitude for liberating the country from terrorism, SLFP General Secretary, Agriculture and Mahaveli Development Minister Maithripala Sirisena said yesterday.

Addressing the UPFA press conference at the Mahaveli Centre he said the public had rejected allegations and vilifications aimed against the President and his family as well as the UPFA government. During the Presidential election rural people had taken a very keen interest in casting their votes for President Rajapaksa who is held in high esteem by those people.

UNP and Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe had expressed his satisfaction that there was a free and fair election. After casting his vote on Tuesday in Colombo he said it was a peaceful election. The President had appealed to his ministers and supporters of the UPFA, the Opposition and the public to keep the peace and not to provoke any violence, the Minister noted.

Though NDF candidate Sarath Fonseka said he wanted peace in the country during the election campaign he used threats against the President and even certain public officials. He said he would jail or punish various persons. The public became aware of his temperament of revenge and defeated him averting disaster for the country and they re-affirmed their faith by voting for President Rajapaksa.

UPFA General Secretary, Education Minister Susil Premajayantha said he wished to thank the Maha Sangha, and all sections and groups who had cooperated with the UPFA to ensure the victory of President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

We appeal to the public and party people to maintain peace and ensure no provocative or harmful incidents take place to detract from the great victory of President Rajapaksa.

He said the defeated party was making false allegations and creating wild stories.

The Elections Commissioner made the official announcement of the final result of the election later in the day. But the defeated group was completely spreading false rumours. These wild stories were completely untrue.

Expats tells international community :Sri Lankans have spoken

Thursday, 28 January 2010

Sri Lanka should be provided with space to strengthen its economy and develop the country. The concerned aggrieved western nations, NGOs, and a section of the media should refrain from taking any action to undermine the resolve of the Sri Lankan people to stand together and march ahead, Sri Lankan Expatriates for National Integration said in a release.

The Association have members in USA, Canada, UK, EU, UAE, Australia, New Zealand Singapore and Japan. It said the Presidential Election has concluded in a peaceful manner except for a few minor incidents.

There had been a high voter turn out and the election observers have commented favourably about the manner in which the Elections Commissioner ran the event and how the voters responded.

However, vested interests representing some Western countries still nursing their wounded egos after the defeat of the LTTE and a section of the international media who had been on the wrong side of Sri Lankan reality for past so many years, are still rattled and continue to act in an aggressive manner to demean the democratic choice of the people of a sovereign nation.

These forces should now realize that the game is now over and the people are firmly behind the President and the nationalist forces.

These disgruntled forces should also examine how they misreported Sri Lanka always attaching ethnic labels to Sri Lankan issues including the elections by depending solely on the reports of so called Sri Lankan expert political commentators and their tribe including Sri Lankan NGO opinion makers.

They have misled the whole world for the past so many years and it is up to the international media and the allied camps to reorient and restructure their Sri Lankan reporting sources, it said.
